Wishing the winter away?

Anyone else as eager for spring as I am? I can hardly wait! I have always been a "warm weather" activist, even though I do appreciate all four seasons. But now I LOVE spring.
Beekeeping has changed me in other ways I never imagined. I notice blooms on flowers and trees a lot more. (Maples in our area are already swollen and will bloom with the first extended warm spell.) I love things I used to hate. (Dandelions are some of my favorite flowers. That bee that buzzes my head while seated on my bac… Continue

Latest News for our local MCBA group!

Well, as all of you may remember, tonight is the MCBA Christmas Party at Diann's house. See the posting for events to find out the details of where and when.

At our last meeting Karla Kean gave an excellent presentation about bees and how they affect our food / economy here in the USA.
I was SHOCKED to learn that by next year over 40% of our food will be imported...FROM THE PEOPLES' REPUBLIC OF CHINA! I don't think many of you will forget the incidents with the tainted dog food, nor the toothpa… Continue

TBA Conference: My 1st!

Howdie BeeKeepers and enthusiasts,
This past weekend was exciting. The TBA conference was a special treat (TY CBees.)

I would say that I have learned a lot, but the absorbtion of so much knowledge will take some time. (like years!)
It was wonderful to glean from some ole' timers and experts.

Friday, the new beekeeper's class was filled to standing room only! (Where were my fellow newbies from Mont. Co?! hmmm) There were several retirees, couples, ladies, men, and a few young children. Our pres… Continue

I'll be getting home around the first week of Decamber and would like to get things started. I need to order some bees so if anyone out there has recomendations on where to order please let me know. Also I am planning on building my own hives and buying some of the acsessories. I plan on using the plans for the 10-Frame Langstroth bee hive and the Dadant Type Frames on Beesource.com. If any of you out there have better plans or suggestions that would be welcomed information too. I am hoping to s… Continue

NEW BOOK ONLINE ABOUT BEES that I wrote

I have tried my hand at writing an e-book.
Here is the link to my book about Honey if you are interested.
http://www.bookrix.com/_title-en-jason-groppel-the-health-benefits-of-honey
It is short and sweet (pun intended)!
I found the book-making application and thought I would try it out.

Feeders for the Fall

New Bee Owners (soon to bee Beekeepers).  If you haven't already purchased your feeders for the Fall; now would bee a good time to place your order.  I would recommend a hive top feeder because you can refill them in cold weather without chilling your bees.  There are a number of hive top feeders on the market.  I personally prefer the one made by BeeMax.  It is an insulated one piece feeder that is very sturdy and easy to clean.  With the application of weathe

Feed Feed Feed

Everyone,

We are having a very short window of warm weather (today and tomorrow).  Feed, feed, feed; both sugar syrup and pollen substitute.  You can add syrup to your hive top feeders or just set feeders out somewhere away from your be yard.  Feeding in the bee yard could cause robbing.

Just place pollen substitute on a paper plate or some other flat surface and just watch the bees gorge themselves.  Don't leave it out overnight because the dew will cause it to harden.  Cr… Continue

Apiariy Registration

Just a reminder to everyone that has not registered their apiary with the State of Tennessee.

Tennessee State Law requires you to register your colony/ies (hives).  If your hive is reported and you have not submitted your registration you could receive a fine of up to $500.00.  Registration is required to protect beekeepers from the expansion of pests and disease.  It only takes a few minutes and

Varroa Trap Seems To Work

A new bait could see Varroa mites literally walking into a trap.

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Gainesville, Fla., are testing a bait-and-kill approach using sticky boards and natural chemical attractants called semioche
